What does an integrative practice mean?

An integrative way of working means that I draw from different psychological models (please read below for more information) according to individual needs. In order for us to truly feel alive and happy in the world we have to be able to make different connections to all fragments populating our internal world. Exploration of these different aspects of self requires different models of investigation. Using a rich pool of resources allows us to tap into all the different aspects of ones unique presence in the world. This eclectic way of working delves into the unconscious realm of ones own diversity and conflict to find insights and meaning in order to heal or change-to continue to grow and feel satisfaction in ones life journey.

A bit more about each model

Psychodynamic

The focus of psychodynamic therapy is to bring the unconscious mind into consciousness - helping individuals to unravel, experience and understand their true, deep-rooted feelings in order to resolve them. Manifesting symptoms are caused by latent or hidden disturbances often due to unresolved issues during development or repressed trauma. Thus the unconscious holds onto painful feelings and memories, which are too difficult for the conscious mind to process. Defences are then built in order to cope with these uncomfortable feelings. Memories and life experiences right back to childhood are examined in order to release defences such as denial or projections.

Existential

Existential psychotherapy is based upon the fundamental belief that each individual experiences intrapsychic conflict due to his or her interaction with certain conditions inherent in human existence called givens. These givens were distinguished by influential psychotherapist Irvin D. Yalom as:

  • Freedom and associated responsibility
  • Death
  • Isolation
  • Meaninglessness

One of the primary aims of existential therapy is to help face the anxieties of life head on and to embrace the freedom of choice humans have, taking full responsibility for these choices as they do so. In order to live more authentically and to be less concerned with superficiality. They also encourage clients to take ownership of their lives, to find meaning and to live fully in the present. Not to dwell on the past, but to use the past as a tool to promote freedom and newfound assertiveness

Transpersonal

The term 'transpersonal' means 'beyond the personal', and this reflects the core aim of this model which is to explore human growth and to discover a deep and more enduring essential self that exists beyond the conditioned ego. In order to heal and grow, Transpersonal psychology addresses equally all aspects of ones being; spiritual, social, intellectual, emotional, physical and creative. Ultimately focusing on the realisation of human potential.
